Personal Statement

Insight Tutoring is the sole proprietorship business of David Freeling, founder and director. Mr. Freeling, has been working as a learning specialist and professional educator since 1997. He has worked with hundreds of students from San Francisco’s finest public and private schools, tutoring students of all ages and giving up to 30 lessons per week in his Noe Valley and Berkeley offices. In addition, Insight Tutoring has conducted SAT courses at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory School and the French American International High School (FAIS-IHS). Insight has also conducted GRE seminars at the UCSF School of Nursing, and SSAT classes at the San Francisco School.

David Freeling grew up in Livingston, New Jersey and graduated from Livingston High School in 1987 as a National Merit Scholar, 5th academically in a class of 430. He attended Columbia University in New York and received a B.A. in mathematics in 1991. Mr. Freeling entered a math PhD program at Columbia in 1991 and completed a year of graduate work in mathematics (the equivalent of an M.A.) before taking leave.

In 1992, Mr. Freeling took leave of his graduate math studies to pursue interests in writing and traveling. He moved to Prague, the capital of then Czechoslovakia, where he lived for four and a half years writing poetry, plays, and articles which he published in a variety magazines, literary journals, and newspapers. Based in Central Europe, Mr. Freeling traveled further east, exploring foreign cultures and visiting countries such as Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, India, Hungary and Poland.

Upon returning to the United States in 1997, Mr. Freeling lived for three years in Atlanta, Georgia where he began his profession as a tutor and independent educator. In Atlanta, he taught at institutions such as the Math Set, a prestigious learning center; Woodward Academy, a private high school; and Advantage Testing, a national test prep. company.

Since 2000, Mr. Freeling has worked as a learning specialist in San Francisco, where he helps countless students improve their grades and standardized test scores. Students from an array of schools such as Lowell, Lick-Wilmerding, FAIS/IHS, Urban, SOTA, University, St. Ignatius, Sacred Heart Cathedral and others have sought out his educational expertise.

In 2004, Mr. Freeling founded Insight Tutoring, a business dedicated to providing affordable SAT test preparation classes to all high school students. Mr. Freeling has spent hundreds of hours researching the new test format, creating materials, and designing an original course syllabus. Insight Tutoring now offers GRE and SSAT courses as well, and is available to bring these courses to interested schools in the greater San Francisco area.
